ERWIN, Tenn. (AP) - Officials have canceled classes at an East Tennessee elementary school after a large sinkhole was found nearby.
Unicoi County Sheriff Mike Hensley told the Johnson City Press that the sinkhole found Saturday by a person walking their dog was about 30 feet from Love Chapel Elementary School. Hensley said the hole was about 25 feet in diameter and more than 100 feet deep with water at the bottom.
He said Unicoi County director of schools Denise Brown decided to close the school on Monday, and is assessing the situation to determine how best to proceed afterward.
Hensley said highway chief administrator officer Terry Haynes has begun planning to fill the hole and put a dye in the water to track its flow.
